The story begins with Nathan being approached by his old associate Harry Flynn and former lover Chloe Frazer to steal a Mongolian oil lamp from a museum in Istanbul. This lamp contains clues about the lost fleet of Marco Polo, who, according to legend, returned from China with more ships than he had originally set sail with—suggesting he had discovered something extraordinary. However, the heist goes wrong, and Flynn betrays Nathan, leaving him imprisoned for three months. Chloe, who secretly remains loyal to Nathan, helps him escape and convinces him to continue the quest for the treasure before Flynn can.
Drake’s journey takes him across various exotic locations, including Nepal and Tibet, as he follows the clues left by Marco Polo. Along the way, he encounters an army of mercenaries led by the ruthless Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević, who is also after the Cintamani Stone to use its power for world domination. Nathan’s mission becomes a race against time, not only to find the lost city but to prevent Lazarević from obtaining the stone’s power.
Drake is aided by Chloe and his long-time mentor and friend, Victor “Sully” Sullivan, as well as his former love interest Elena Fisher, a journalist who becomes embroiled in the adventure once more. Their relationships are tested, especially with the love triangle between Chloe, Nathan, and Elena, but they must work together to stop Lazarević.
The search for the Cintamani Stone leads Drake through harrowing set-pieces, including battles atop a moving train, collapsing buildings, and deadly encounters in snowy mountains. As he delves deeper into Shambhala’s mysteries, Nathan discovers that the stone is not a gem but rather a resin that grants invincibility—an artifact of immense power, capable of creating immortal warriors.
In the climactic battle, Nathan faces Lazarević, who has consumed the resin and become nearly invincible. Despite the overwhelming odds, Nathan outsmarts Lazarević and leaves him to be finished off by the guardians of Shambhala. In the end, Shambhala is destroyed, and Nathan escapes with his friends, having learned that the true treasure lies not in material wealth, but in the relationships he’s built along the way.
