Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops takes place in 1970, six years after the events of MGS3: Snake Eater. You play as Naked Snake (also known as Big Boss), who has gone rogue from the CIA after defeating The Boss. Snake is captured and taken to a secret Soviet base in San Hieronymo, Colombia, where a rogue FOX unit led by Gene plans to spark a global war.

Escaping captivity, Snake teams up with Roy Campbell (his future comrade), and they begin building a small army to stop Gene’s uprising. You recruit soldiers from the battlefield—either by knocking them out and dragging them back or convincing them to join your cause. This was one of the first Metal Gear games to introduce the recruitment and squad-based gameplay later expanded in Peace Walker and The Phantom Pain.

As the story unfolds, Snake uncovers the true purpose of Gene’s rebellion and the existence of a new nuclear-equipped Metal Gear. The game dives deep into themes of loyalty, identity, and legacy—laying the groundwork for Snake’s transformation into Big Boss and his eventual fall from grace.

The climax features intense showdowns, betrayals, and Snake’s first steps toward forming Outer Heaven—the soldier’s nation he would later become infamous for.
